How do I know which forms of Calcium and Magnesium to use?
Calcium: Although chelated forms, such as calcium citrate or calcium gluconate, tend to be better absorbed than calcium carbonate, for practical purposes, I am unconvinced that one form actually works better than the others. However, it is important to avoid calcium from oyster shell, dolomite, or bone meal sources, as these may contain dangerous levels of the neurotoxin lead.
Magnesium: As with calcium, there are many forms of magnesium supplementation available, each of which has been used in clinical studies and shown to have therapeutic benefits. Until more convincing studies surface, I am not inclined to recommend one form over another. A word of caution: If you experience loose stools or diarrhea after you begin supplementing with magnesium, reduce the dose. |
