Hello Chris
I am getting started on your plan this week and wanted to ask about meat substitute products. I often use Quorn products that are based on mycoprotein. I was wondering if I can use these as meat alternatives. I do eat fish and eggs but was wondering if I can use quorn mince or fillets in some of the recipes from the book.
Many thanks in advance

Hi P,
Mycoprotein is soy-based (though it also contains fungi for texture) and should be avoided until at least week 4. Even then, I don't recommend substituting it for animal protein sources because the amino acid profile is not ideal for muscle hypertrophy/fat burning (see chapter 2 for more on why vegetable protein fall short).
As of week four, you will be able to have lowfat cottage cheese, yogurt, and/or engineered whey or egg protein powder at meal times in the place of fish and eggs. However, since you eat fish and eggs, I really encourage you to exploit these forms of animal protein at each of your three meals until week 4. I realize it's going to take some creativity to accomplish this; if it just gets too tough-- add the engineered protein a little early and start making smoothies.
Best Wishes,
Chris |
